This lacquered wooden box is part of the Barbera dels Aragonés House Museum collection of decorative objects. It is a rectangular black lacquered piece with four legs. It is located in the main living room of the house and dates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This type of wooden boxes used to be prominent pieces in the Universal Exhibitions from the 20th century, where collections of Japanese decorative objects were displayed. In this case, it is a small black lacquered wooden box made up of small drawers and compartments. It is similar to that of the Spanish “bargueños”.
Within the repertoire of lacquered products of the Universal Exhibition, this type of pieces were adapted to the tastes of their recipients and varied in the quality of their materials, in this box we can even appreciate the use of paper among the raw materials.
The decoration of the box features a series of floral motifs in gold of floral type and a bird in one of the center doors and small inlays in mother-of-pearl and other larger ones on porcelain.
